The Prophet ﷺ said, "One prayer to the next prayer is an expiation for what comes between them, one Friday prayer to the next Friday prayer is an expiation for what comes between them, and one month to the next month is an expiation for what comes between them, except for three things."The narrator said, "We understood that something serious had come up, except for associating partners with Allah, breaking the pledge, and abandoning the Sunnah."We said, "Messenger of Allah, we already know what associating partners with Allah means, but what is breaking the pledge and abandoning the Sunnah?"He replied, "As for breaking the pledge, it is when you give a man your oath of allegiance and then take up your sword to fight him. As for abandoning the Sunnah, it is departing from the united community."
حدثنا يزيد أخبرنا العوام حدثني عبد الله بن السائب عن رجل من الأنصار
عن النبي ﷺ قال الصلاة إلى الصلاة التي قبلها كفارة والجمعة إلى الجمعة التي قبلها كفارة والشهر إلى الشهر الذي قبله كفارة إلا من ثلاث قال فعرفنا أنه أمر حدث إلا من الشرك بالله ونكث الصفقة وترك السنة قال قلنا يا رسول الله هذا الشرك بالله قد عرفناه فما نكث الصفقة وترك السنة قال أما نكث الصفقة فأن تعطي رجلا بيعتك ثم تقاتله بسيفك وأما ترك السنة فالخروج من الجماعة
