I used to consider that Ali was the most virtuous of people after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He then mentioned the hadith.I said, "No, by Allah, Commander of the Believers, I did not consider anyone among the Muslims after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ more virtuous than you."He said, "Shall I not tell you who was the most virtuous of people after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"I said, "Yes, please."He said, "Abu Bakr
."Then he said, "Shall I not tell you who was the best of people after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr?"I said, "Yes, please."He said, "Umar

Its isnad is sahih. His statement in it, "then he mentioned the hadith," is an abridgment of a hadith I have not been able to find, and perhaps it will come to my attention later, in which case I will note it. This hadith is among the additions of Abdullah bin Ahmad. Something of the meaning of this hadith has already passed at 833-837. See also 1052.
