He informed him that he came to Umar bin Khattab during his caliphate, and Umar said to him, "Was I not told that you take charge of various tasks for the people, and when you are given compensation for your work, you dislike accepting it?"He said, "I replied, 'Yes, that is so.'"Umar
asked, "What do you intend by that?"He said, "I answered, 'I own horses and slaves, and I am well off. I wish my compensation to be charity for the Muslims.'"Umar
said, "Do not do that, for I once wanted what you want. The Prophet ﷺ used to give me gifts, and I would say, 'Give it to someone more in need of it than I am,' until once he gave me some wealth and I said, 'Give it to someone more in need of it than I am.' The Prophet ﷺ said to me, 'Take it, keep it as your property, and give it as charity. Whatever comes to you of this wealth while you are neither craving it nor begging for it, take it. As for what does not come to you, do not let your soul chase after it.'"
Its isnad is sahih. Al-Hafiz said in Tahdhib 3:66-67, in the biography of Huwaytib, "Bukhari, Muslim, and Nasai narrated one hadith from him about compensation for work, and it is the one in whose isnad four companions are gathered." He means this hadith. The four companions are Saaib, Huwaytib, Abdullah bin Saadi, and Umar.
