The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Yahya at times said, "I witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reciting in the prayer, and he left out something he did not recite."A man said to him, "Messenger of Allah, you left out such-and-such a verse."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Why did you not remind me of it?"Sulayman said in his version, "He said, 'I thought it had been abrogated.'"Sulayman said, Yahya bin Kathir al-Azdi narrated to me, he said, Maswar bin Yazid al-Asadi al-Maliki narrated to us.
حدثنا محمد بن العلاء وسليمان بن عبد الرحمن الدمشقي قالا أخبرنا مروان بن معاوية عن يحيى الكاهلي
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال يحيى وربما قال شهدت رسول الله ﷺ يقرأ في الصلاة فترك شيئا لم يقرأه فقال له رجل يا رسول الله تركت آية كذا وكذا فقال رسول الله ﷺ هلا أذكرتنيها قال سليمان في حديثه قال كنت أراها نسخت وقال سليمان قال حدثني يحيى بن كثير الأزدي قال حدثنا المسور بن يزيد الأسدي المالكي
Its chain is hasan. Bukhari transmitted it in Juz Qira, hadith 194, and Abdullah bin Zawaid al-Musnad, 4/74, from the hadith of Marwan bin Muawiya Fazari, through this same route, and he stated explicitly that he heard it directly. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, hadith 1648, and so did Ibn Hibban, hadith 378, 379.Yahya bin Kathir was deemed trustworthy by Ibn Hibban and by the majority of scholars, and his hadith does not fall below the level of hasan.
