The Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished a prayer in which he had recited aloud and asked, "Did any of you recite along with me just now?"A man replied, "Yes, Messenger of Allah."He said, "I was wondering why I was being contended with in the Quran."So the people stopped reciting along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the prayers where the Prophet ﷺ recited aloud, once they heard this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
حدثنا القعنبي عن مالك عن ابن شهاب عن ابن أكيمة الليثي
أن رسول الله ﷺ انصرف من صلاة جهر فيها بالقراءة فقال هل قرأ معي أحد منكم آنفا فقال رجل نعم يا رسول الله قال إني أقول مالي أنازع القرآن قال فانتهى الناس عن القراءة مع رسول الله ﷺ فيما جهر فيه النبي ﷺ بالقراءة من الصلوات حين سمعوا ذلك من رسول الله ﷺ
[Sahih]. Tirmidhi narrated it, Prayer, chapter on what has been said about not reciting behind the imam, hadith no. 312, from the hadith of Malik with this wording, and he said, hasan. It is also found in Muwatta (Yahya's version), 1/86-87 (and Qanabi's version, pp. 136-137), and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, hadith no. 454.
