It was reported from the Prophet ﷺ with the same meaning, with the addition that another man came and said, "Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah, His blessings, and His forgiveness."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Forty."He said, "This is how virtues increase."

[Its chain of transmission is daif] Tabarani reported it in Al-Kabir, 20/182, from the hadith of Ibn Abu Maryam, through this route, without any doubt expressed, and it has a supporting narration in Tarikh al-Kabir by Bukhari, 1/330, though its chain is also daif, because it contains Muhammad bin Humayd Razi, the narrator from Ibrahim bin Mukhtar, and he is daif.
