Muaz bin Jabal reported,

The prayer went through three stages, and fasting went through three stages. Nasr narrated the hadith in its full length, while Ibn al-Muthanna recounted only the portion concerning their praying toward Bayt al-Maqdis.He said, "The third stage was that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah and prayed, that is, toward Bayt al-Maqdis, for thirteen months. Then Allah the Exalted revealed this verse, 'We have certainly seen the turning of your face toward the heaven, so We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram, and wherever you are, turn your faces toward it' [Baqarah 2:144]. So Allah the Exalted directed him toward the Kaabah."His narration of the hadith is complete here.Nasr named the man who saw the dream. He said, "Abdullah bin Zayd, a man from the Ansar, came." And he said in it, "He faced the qiblah and said, 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah. I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Come to prayer,' twice, 'Come to success,' twice, 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar. There is no god but Allah.' Then he paused for a moment, then he stood and said the like of it, except that he added, after saying 'Come to success,' 'The prayer has begun, the prayer has begun.'"He said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Teach it to Bilal." So Bilal made the call to prayer with it.And he said concerning fasting, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast three days of every month and fast the day of Ashura. Then Allah the Exalted revealed, 'Fasting has been prescribed upon you as it was prescribed upon those before you,' up to His saying, 'feeding a poor person' [Baqarah 2:183–184]. So whoever wished to fast, fasted, and whoever wished to break his fast and feed a poor person each day, that sufficed him. This was one stage. Then Allah the Exalted revealed, 'The month of Ramadan in which the Quran was revealed,' up to 'other days' [Baqarah 2:185]. So the fast became binding upon whoever witnessed the month, and upon the traveler the obligation to make it up. The provision of feeding remained for the elderly man and woman who were unable to fast. Then Sirmah came, having worked all his day..." and he continued the hadith.
