I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "If you pursue people's faults, you will corrupt them, or nearly corrupt them."Abu Darda said, "These are words Muawiya heard from the Messenger of Allah, and Allah Most High benefited him through them."
حدثنا عيسى بن محمد الرملي وابن عوف وهذا لفظه قالا حدثنا الفريابي عن سفيان عن ثور عن راشد بن سعد
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول إنك إن اتبعت عورات الناس أفسدتهم أو كدت أن تفسدهم فقال أبو الدرداء كلمة سمعها معاوية من رسول الله نفعه الله تعالى بها
[Sahih] Tabarani related it in Al-Kabir, 19/379, from the hadith of Firyabi with this same chain, but its chain is daif, though Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, no. 1495. It has a hasan corroborating witness in Bukhari's Adab al-Mufrad, no. 248.
