Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting with us gathered around him and he stood up intending to return, he would leave behind his sandals or something else he had been wearing. His companions would recognize this sign and remain in their places.

كان رسول الله ﷺ إذا جلس وجلسنا حوله فقام فأراد الرجوع نزع نعليه أو بعض ما يكون عليه فيعرف ذلك أصحابه فيثبتون

Sourcing. [Its isnad is daif] Bayhaqi narrated it, 6/151 (with a scribal error in the printed edition), from the hadith of Abu Dawud with the same wording. Tamam bin Najih is daif, and Kaab al-Iyadi has some weakness in him (Taqrib).
