A man praised another man in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ, so he said to him, "You have cut your companion's throat," repeating it three times. Then he said, "If one of you must praise his companion, let him say, 'I reckon him to be such-and-such,' as he wishes to say, 'and I do not declare him pure before Allah.'"
حدثنا أحمد بن يونس حدثنا أبو شهاب عن خالد الحذاء
أن رجلا أثنى على رجل عند النبي ﷺ فقال له قطعت عنق صاحبك ثلاث مرات ثم قال إذا مدح أحدكم صاحبه لا محالة فليقل إني أحسبه كما يريد أن يقول ولا أزكيه على الله
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Manners, chapter "What is disliked about excessive flattery," hadith no. 6061, and Muslim in the Book of Asceticism, chapter "The prohibition of praise when it involves excess," hadith no. 3000, from the hadith of Khalid Haddan, through this same chain.
