Ali bin Abu Talib reported,

People, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "A people will emerge from my nation who recite the Quran in such a way that your recitation is nothing compared to theirs, your prayer is nothing compared to their prayer, and your fasting is nothing compared to their fasting. They recite the Quran thinking it counts in their favor, but it counts against them. Their prayer does not pass beyond their throats. They will pass through Islam as an arrow passes through its prey. If the army that defeats them knew what has been decreed for them through the tongue of their Prophet ﷺ, they would rely on this knowledge alone and abandon other works. The sign of these people is that among them is a man who has an upper arm but no forearm. On his upper arm is something like a nipple with white hairs upon it."Will you go off to fight Muawiya and the people of Sham and leave these men behind to succeed you among your offspring and your property? By Allah, I truly hope that these are the very people, for they have shed forbidden blood and raided the people's grazing herds. So march in the name of Allah.Salama bin Kuhayl said, Zayd bin Wahb took me through every stage of the journey until we passed over a bridge.When we met them, the Kharijites were under the command of Abdullah bin Wahb al-Rasibi. He said to them, "Throw down your spears and draw your swords from their sheaths, for I fear they will appeal to you as they did on the day of Harura."So they cast aside their spears and drew their swords, and the people thrust at them with their spears. They were killed, falling one upon another. Only two men from our side were struck down that day.Ali said, "Search among them for the deformed one." But they did not find him.So Ali himself rose and went to a group of slain men piled upon each other and said, "Pull them apart." They found him at the bottom against the ground. Ali exclaimed, "Allah is the greatest! Allah has spoken truly and His Messenger has delivered the message."Ubayda al-Salmani stood up and said, "Commander of the Believers, by Allah besides whom there is no deity, did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"Ali replied, "Yes, by Allah besides whom there is no deity."Ubayda made him swear three times, and each time he swore.

حدثنا الحسن بن علي حدثنا عبد الرزاق عن عبد الملك بن أبي سليمان عن سلمة بن كهيل قال أخبرني زيد بن وهب الجهني أنه كان في الجيش الذين كانوا مع علي عليه السلام الذين ساروا إلى الخوارج

فقال علي عليه السلام

أيها الناس إني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول يخرج قوم من أمتي يقرءون القرآن ليست قراءتكم إلى قراءتهم شيئا ولا صلاتكم إلى صلاتهم شيئا ولا صيامكم إلى صيامهم شيئا يقرءون القرآن يحسبون أنه لهم وهو عليهم لا تجاوز صلاتهم تراقيهم يمرقون من الإسلام كما يمرق السهم من الرمية لو يعلم الجيش الذين يصيبونهم ما قضي لهم على لسان نبيهم ﷺ لنكلوا عن العمل وآية ذلك أن فيهم رجلا له عضد وليست له ذراع على عضده مثل حلمة الثدي عليه شعرات بيض أفتذهبون إلى معاوية وأهل الشام وتتركون هؤلاء يخلفونكم في ذراريكم وأموالكم والله إني لأرجو أن يكونوا هؤلاء القوم فإنهم قد سفكوا الدم الحرام وأغاروا في سرح الناس فسيروا على اسم الله قال سلمة بن كهيل فنزلني زيد بن وهب منزلا منزلا حتى مر بنا على قنطرة قال فلما التقينا وعلى الخوارج عبد الله بن وهب الراسبي فقال لهم ألقوا الرماح وسلوا السيوف من جفونها فإني أخاف أن يناشدوكم كما ناشدوكم يوم حروراء قال فوحشوا برماحهم واستلوا السيوف وشجرهم الناس برماحهم قال وقتلوا بعضهم على بعضهم قال وما أصيب من الناس يومئذ إلا رجلان فقال علي رضي الله عنه التمسوا فيهم المخدج فلم يجدوا قال فقام علي رضي الله عنه بنفسه حتى أتى ناسا قد قتل بعضهم على بعض فقال أخرجوهم فوجدوه مما يلي الأرض فكبر وقال صدق الله وبلغ رسوله فقام إليه عبيدة السلماني فقال يا أمير المؤمنين والله الذي لا إله إلا هو لقد سمعت هذا من رسول الله ﷺ فقال إي والله الذي لا إله إلا هو حتى استحلفه ثلاثا وهو يحلف
