Hajjaj bin Minhal reported,

I heard Hammad bin Salama explaining the hadith, "Every child is born upon the fitrah." He said, "In our view, this refers to the moment when Allah took the covenant from them while they were still in the loins of their fathers, when He said, 'Am I not your Lord? They said, Yes' [Araf 7:172]."
