The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The Jews split into seventy-one or seventy-two sects, the Christians split into seventy-one or seventy-two sects, and my nation will split into seventy-three sects."
حدثنا وهب بن بقية عن خالد عن محمد بن عمرو عن أبي سلمة
قال رسول الله ﷺ افترقت اليهود على إحدى أو ثنتين وسبعين فرقة وتفرقت النصارى على إحدى أو ثنتين وسبعين فرقة وتفترق أمتي على ثلاث وسبعين فرقة
[Its chain of transmission is hasan] Tirmidhi recorded it in the Book of Faith, chapter on what has been said regarding the division of this nation, hadith no. 264, and Ibn Majah, hadith no. 3991, from the hadith of Muhammad bin Amr Laythi through this route. Tirmidhi said, "Hasan sahih." Hakim graded it sahih according to the criterion of Muslim, 1/128, and Dhahabi agreed with him.
