A man was killed during the time of the Prophet ﷺ, and the case was brought before the Prophet ﷺ, who handed the killer over to the guardian of the slain man.The killer said, "Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I did not intend to kill him."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to the guardian, "If he is telling the truth and you kill him, you will enter the Fire."So the guardian set him free. He had been bound with a leather strap, and he went out dragging his strap behind him, so he was called Dhu an-Nisah, the man of the strap.
حدثنا عثمان بن أبي شيبة أخبرنا أبو معاوية حدثنا الأعمش عن أبي صالح
قتل رجل على عهد النبي ﷺ فرفع ذلك إلى النبي ﷺ فدفعه إلى ولي المقتول فقال القاتل يا رسول الله والله ما أردت قتله قال فقال رسول الله ﷺ للولي أما إنه إن كان صادقا ثم قتلته دخلت النار قال فخلى سبيله قال وكان مكتوفا بنسعة فخرج يجر نسعته فسمي ذا النسعة
Reference, sahih. Tirmidhi transmitted it in the Book of Blood Money, in the chapter on what was said regarding the next of kin of a murder victim in matters of retaliation and forgiveness, no. 1407, and Nasai, no. 4726, and Ibn Majah, no. 2690, from the hadith of Abu Muawiya al-Darir with this wording. Tirmidhi said, "Hasan sahih."
