Abdul-Rahman bin Azhar reported,

I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the morning of the Conquest, while I was a young lad, making his way through the people, asking about the house of Khalid bin Walid. A man who had been drinking was brought to him, and he ordered the people to strike him with whatever was in their hands. Some struck him with a whip, some with a stick, and some with their sandals. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself threw dust at him. When Abu Bakr came to power, a drinker was brought to him, and he asked the people about the beating that the Prophet ﷺ had administered. They estimated it at forty, so Abu Bakr ordered forty lashes. When Umar came to power, Khalid bin Walid wrote to him saying, "The people have plunged into drinking and have come to belittle the prescribed penalty and its punishment."Umar said, "They are with you here, so ask them," and the early Muhajirun were present with him. He consulted them, and they unanimously agreed that he should administer eighty lashes.Ali said, "When a man drinks, he speaks falsely, so I am of the view that he should be given the same penalty as that for slander."
