Abu Musa said, "I came to the Prophet ﷺ with two men from the Ashari tribe, one on my right and the other on my left, and both of them asked to be appointed to a position of authority while the Prophet ﷺ remained silent."The Prophet ﷺ then asked, "What do you say, Abu Musa," or, "Abdullah bin Qays?"Abu Musa replied, "By the One who sent you with the truth, they did not inform me of what was in their minds, and I had no idea they were seeking appointment."Abu Musa continued, "It was as if I could see his siwak beneath his lip, which had drawn back."The Prophet ﷺ said, "We will never appoint," or, "We do not appoint to our work anyone who seeks it. But you go, Abu Musa," or, "Abdullah bin Qays."So he sent him to Yemen, then sent Muaz bin Jabal after him. When Muaz arrived, Abu Musa said, "Dismount," and laid out a cushion for him. There was a man bound in fetters near him.Muaz asked, "Who is this?"Abu Musa replied, "This man was a Jew, then he embraced Islam, then he returned to his former evil religion."Muaz said, "I will not sit down until he is executed by the decree of Allah and His Messenger."Abu Musa said, "Sit down, yes."Muaz said, "I will not sit down until he is executed by the decree of Allah and His Messenger," repeating it three times. So Abu Musa ordered the man to be executed, and he was killed. Then they discussed praying at night, and one of them, Muaz bin Jabal, said, "As for me, I sleep and I rise," or, "I rise and I sleep, and I hope for the same reward in my sleep as I hope for in my standing in prayer."
