The Prophet ﷺ said, "The first thing that brought about decline among the Children of Israil was this. A man would meet another man and say, 'You there, fear Allah and abandon what you are doing, for it is not lawful for you.' Then he would meet him the next day, and that would not stop him from being his eating companion, his drinking companion, and his sitting companion. When they behaved that way, Allah struck the hearts of some of them against others."Then he recited, "Cursed were those who disbelieved among the Children of Israil by the tongue of Dawud and Isa, the son of Maryam" [Maidah 5:78] up to His words, "transgressors" [Maidah 5:81].Then he said, "No indeed, by Allah, you must enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and you must restrain the hand of the wrongdoer, and you must bend him firmly toward the truth and confine him strictly to the truth."He added, "Or else Allah will strike the hearts of some of you against others, and then He will curse you as He cursed them."
