A sheep was given as charity to a freedwoman of ours, and it died. The Prophet ﷺ passed by it and said, "Why did you not tan its hide and make use of it?"They replied, "Messenger of Allah, it is dead."He said, "Only eating it has been forbidden."

أهدي لمولاة لنا شاة من الصدقة فماتت فمر بها النبي ﷺ فقال ألا دبغتم إهابها واستنفعتم به قالوا يا رسول الله إنها ميتة قال إنما حرم أكلها
Muslim narrated it in the Chapter on Menstruation, in the Book on the Purification of Dead Animal Hides through Tanning, hadith 363, from the report of Sufyan Ibn Uyayna. Bukhari narrated it in the Book on Zakat, in the Chapter on Giving Charity to the Freed Slaves of the Prophet's Wives, hadith 1492, from the report of Zuhri, through the same chain.
