Umar bin Khattab saw a silk garment being sold at the door of the mosque and said, "Messenger of Allah, if only you would buy this and wear it on Fridays and when delegations come to visit you."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "This is worn only by one who has no share in the Hereafter."Later, some such garments were brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he gave one of them to Umar bin Khattab.Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, you have given this to me to wear, yet you said about the garment of Utarid what you said?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "I did not give it to you so that you would wear it."So Umar bin Khattab gave it to a polytheist brother of his in Mecca.
حدثنا عبد الله بن مسلمة عن مالك عن نافع
أن عمر بن الخطاب رأى حلة سيراء عند باب المسجد تباع فقال يا رسول الله لو اشتريت هذه فلبستها يوم الجمعة وللوفد إذا قدموا عليك فقال رسول الله ﷺ إنما يلبس هذه من لا خلاق له في الآخرة ثم جاء رسول الله ﷺ منها حلل فأعطى عمر بن الخطاب منها حلة فقال عمر يا رسول الله كسوتنيها وقد قلت في حلة عطارد ما قلت فقال رسول الله ﷺ إني لم أكسكها لتلبسها فكساها عمر بن الخطاب أخا له مشركا بمكة
Bukhari narrated it in "Gifts and Their Virtue and Encouragement Toward Them," chapter "A Gift Which It Is Disliked to Wear," hadith no. 2612, from Abdullah bin Maslama Qanabi, and Muslim narrated it in "Clothing and Adornment," chapter "The Prohibition of Wearing Silk and the Like for Men," hadith no. 2068, both from the hadith of Malik, in this wording. It is also found in Muwatta (Yahya), 2/917, 918.
