A group of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ set out on a journey and stopped at one of the Arab settlements. They asked the people there for hospitality, but the people refused to host them. Then the chief of that settlement was stung, and his people tried everything to help him but nothing worked. Some of them said, "Why don't you go to that group who stopped here? Perhaps one of them has something that can help."So they came to the Companions and said, "Our chief has been stung. Do any of you have anything that can help him?"One of the Companions replied, "Yes, by Allah, I do perform ruqyah. But by Allah, we asked you for hospitality and you refused to host us, so I will not perform ruqyah unless you give me a fee."They agreed to give him a flock of sheep. He went to the chief and recited Umm al-Kitab over him while spitting lightly, and the man recovered as though he had been released from a tether. The people then paid them the fee they had agreed upon. Some of the Companions said, "Let us divide it among ourselves."But the one who had performed the ruqyah said, "Do not do so until we come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and tell him what happened, then see what he instructs us."So they went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him about it. He said, "How did you know it was a ruqyah? You did the right thing. Divide it among yourselves, and assign me a share along with you."
