Jabir bin Abdullah reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us out and placed Abu Ubayda bin al-Jarrah in command over us, dispatching us to intercept a caravan of Quraysh. He provided us with a single sack of dates as our only provision. Abu Ubayda would give each of us one date at a time, which we sucked on the way a child sucks, then drank water afterward, and that would suffice us for the day until nightfall. We would also beat down leaves from trees with our staffs, moisten them with water, and eat them.We traveled along the seashore until something resembling a huge sand dune came into view. When we reached it, we found it was a creature called the ambergris whale.Abu Ubayda said, "It is dead, so it is not lawful for us." Then he said, "No, rather we are the messengers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and are in the path of Allah, and you have been forced to it, so eat."We stayed there for a month, and we were three hundred men, until we grew fat. When we returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned this to him, he said, "It is provision that Allah brought forth for you. Do you have any of its meat with you that you might feed us some of it?" So we sent some of it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he ate from it.

عن جابر قال

بعثنا رسول الله ﷺ وأمر علينا أبا عبيدة بن الجراح نتلقى عيرا لقريش وزودنا جرابا من تمر لم نجد له غيره فكان أبو عبيدة يعطينا تمرة تمرة كنا نمصها كما يمص الصبي ثم نشرب عليها من الماء فتكفينا يومنا إلى الليل وكنا نضرب بعصينا الخبط ثم نبله بالماء فنأكله وانطلقنا على ساحل البحر فرفع لنا كهيئة الكثيب الضخم فأتيناه فإذا هو دابة تدعى العنبر فقال أبو عبيدة ميتة ولا تحل لنا ثم قال لا بل نحن رسل رسول الله ﷺ وفي سبيل الله وقد اضطررتم إليه فكلوا فأقمنا عليه شهرا ونحن ثلاث مائة حتى سمنا فلما قدمنا إلى رسول الله ﷺ ذكرنا ذلك له فقال هو رزق أخرجه الله لكم فهل معكم من لحمه شيء فتطعمونا منه فأرسلنا منه إلى رسول الله ﷺ فأكل
