The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The procrastination of one who can afford to pay makes his honor and punishment lawful."Ibn Mubarak explained, "Making his honor lawful means speaking harshly to him, and his punishment means imprisoning him."
حدثنا عبد الله بن محمد النفيلي حدثنا عبد الله بن المبارك عن وبر بن أبي دليلة عن محمد بن ميمون
عن رسول الله ﷺ قال لي الواجد يحل عرضه وعقوبته قال ابن المبارك يحل عرضه يغلظ له وعقوبته يحبس له
Takhrij, [its isnad is hasan]. Nasai narrated it in Buyu, chapter on Matl al-Ghani, Hadith: 4693, from the hadith of Ibn Mubarak, with the same wording. Ibn Majah also narrated it, Hadith: 2427, and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, Hadith: 1164, as did Hakim, 4/102, and Dhahabi agreed with him. Bukhari mentioned it as a suspended narration before Hadith: 2401, and Hafiz graded it hasan in Fath al-Bari, 5/62.
