Bara bin Azib reported,

He owned a she-camel that was prone to causing damage. It entered a walled garden and ruined some of it. The matter was brought before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who ruled that protecting walled gardens during the day is the responsibility of their owners, while guarding livestock at night is the responsibility of their owners, and that the owners of livestock are liable for whatever damage their animals cause at night.
