People used to sell fruit before its ripeness became apparent. When the harvest season came and the time for payment arrived, the buyer would say, "The fruit has been struck with rot, it has been struck with blight, it has been struck with disease," listing defects as their excuses. When their disputes became frequent before the Prophet ﷺ, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, by way of advice he was offering, "If you must do so, then do not sell the fruit until its ripeness becomes apparent," because of their many disputes and disagreements.
حدثنا أحمد بن صالح حدثنا عنبسة بن خالد حدثني يونس قال سألت أبا الزناد عن بيع الثمر قبل أن يبدو صلاحه وما ذكر في ذلك فقال كان عروة بن الزبير يحدث عن سهل بن أبي حثمة
كان الناس يتبايعون الثمار قبل أن يبدو صلاحها فإذا جد الناس وحضر تقاضيهم قال المبتاع قد أصاب الثمر الدمان وأصابه قشام وأصابه مراض عاهات يحتجون بها فلما كثرت خصومتهم عند النبي ﷺ قال رسول الله ﷺ كالمشورة يشير بها فإما لا فلا تتبايعوا الثمرة حتى يبدو صلاحها لكثرة خصومتهم واختلافهم
