We set out on a journey, and one of our men was struck on the head by a stone, which split his head open. He later had a wet dream, so he asked his companions, "Do you find any concession for me to perform tayammum?"They replied, "We find no concession for you, since you are able to use water."So he bathed, and he died.When we came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of what had happened, he said, "They killed him, may Allah kill them. Why did they not ask when they did not know? The cure for ignorance is only to ask. It would have sufficed him to perform tayammum, and to squeeze," or "to bind," Musa was uncertain which, "a cloth over his wound, then wipe over it and wash the rest of his body."

خرجنا في سفر فأصاب رجلا منا حجر فشجه في رأسه ثم احتلم فسأل أصحابه فقال هل تجدون لي رخصة في التيمم فقالوا ما نجد لك رخصة وأنت تقدر على الماء فاغتسل فمات فلما قدمنا على النبي ﷺ أخبر بذلك فقال قتلوه قتلهم الله ألا سألوا إذ لم يعلموا فإنما شفاء العي السؤال إنما كان يكفيه أن يتيمم ويعصر أو يعصب شك موسى على جرحه خرقة ثم يمسح عليها ويغسل سائر جسده

Sourcing, its isnad is daif. Daraqutni reported it, 1/190, no. 719, from the hadith of Musa bin Abdul-Rahman Antaki, through this route. Zubayr bin Khurayq was deemed daif by Daraqutni and others, while Ibn Hibban alone deemed him trustworthy, but the ruling of daif is more sound.
