Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Bakr reported,

Some guests came to stay with us. Abu Bakr used to sit talking with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at night, and he said, "I will not come back to you until you have finished hosting these people and given them their meal."So he brought them their meal, but they said, "We will not eat it until Abu Bakr comes."Then he came and asked, "What happened with your guests? Have you finished serving them their meal?"The household said, "No."I said, "I did bring them their meal, but they refused and said, 'By Allah, we will not eat it until he comes.'"The guests said, "He is telling the truth. He brought it to us, but we refused until you came."Abu Bakr asked, "What held you back?"They said, "You were not here."He said, "By Allah, I will not eat it tonight."They said, "And by Allah, we will not eat it until you eat."He said, "I have never seen a night as bad as this one." Then he said, "Bring your food out."So their food was set before them, and he said, "In the name of Allah," and he ate and they ate.I was told that when morning came he went early to the Prophet ﷺ and told him what he had done and what they had done, and the Prophet said, "Rather, you were the most dutiful of them and the most truthful."He added, in the version from Salim, "No mention of any expiation reached me."
