The Ansar came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Uhud and said, "We have suffered wounds and exhaustion. What do you command us to do?"He said, "Dig the graves, make them wide, and place two or three men in each grave."It was asked, "Which of them should be placed first?"He said, "The one who knew the most of the Quran."The narrator said, "My father Amir was killed that day, buried between two others," or he said, "with one other."
حدثنا عبد الله بن مسلمة القعنبي أن سليمان بن المغيرة حدثهم عن حميد يعني ابن هلال
جاءت الأنصار إلى رسول الله ﷺ يوم أحد فقالوا أصابنا قرح وجهد فكيف تأمرنا قال احفروا وأوسعوا واجعلوا الرجلين والثلاثة في القبر قيل فأيهم يقدم قال أكثرهم قرآنا قال أصيب أبي يومئذ عامر بين اثنين أو قال واحد
Its isnad is sahih. Tirmidhi narrated it in the chapter on jihad, in the section on what has been mentioned regarding the burial of martyrs, hadith no. 1713, from the hadith of Humayd bin Hilal, through this same route, and he explicitly stated hearing it directly, as recorded by Ahmad, 4/20. Tirmidhi said, hasan sahih. Nasai also narrated it, hadith no. 2012, as did Ibn Majah, hadith no. 1560.
