I was on the road of Mirbad when a funeral procession passed by, accompanied by a large crowd. They said it was the funeral of Abdullah bin Umayr, so I followed it. There I saw a man wearing a thin cloak, riding his small horse, with a piece of cloth on his head shielding him from the sun.I asked, "Who is this nobleman?"They replied, "This is Anas bin Malik."When the bier was set down, Anas stood and prayed over it, with me standing right behind him, nothing blocking my view. He stood at the head of the deceased and pronounced four takbirs, neither prolonging them nor rushing through them, then went to sit down. The people said, "Abu Hamza, the Ansari woman."So they brought her forward on a green bier, and he stood at the level of her midsection and prayed over her in the same manner as he had prayed over the man, then sat down.Ala bin Ziyad asked, "Abu Hamza, is this how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do it? Did he pray over the deceased the way you did, pronouncing four takbirs, standing at the head of the man and at the midsection of the woman?"He answered, "Yes."Ala then asked, "Abu Hamza, did you fight alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"He replied, "Yes, I fought with him at Hunayn. The polytheists came out and charged at us until we saw our own cavalry behind our backs. Among the enemy was a man who kept charging at us, crushing us and breaking through our lines. Then Allah defeated them, and they began to be brought forward to pledge allegiance to him on Islam.A man among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ said, 'I have made a vow that if Allah delivers to me the man who was crushing us today, I will strike his neck.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent. Then the man was brought forward, and when he saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said, 'Messenger of Allah, I have repented to Allah.'So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ held back from accepting his pledge, so that the other man could fulfill his vow. The companion kept presenting himself before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ hoping he would order him to kill the man, but he was too in awe of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to kill him on his own. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw that the companion was not going to act, he accepted the man's pledge. The companion then said, 'Messenger of Allah, what about my vow?'He replied, 'I only held back from him all this time so that you would fulfill your vow.'He said, 'Messenger of Allah, why did you not signal to me with your eye?'The Prophet ﷺ answered, 'It is not fitting for a prophet to make signals with his eye.'"Abu Ghalib said, I asked about what Anas had done in standing at the woman's midsection, and they told me that this was simply because there were no covered biers in those days, so the imam would stand at the level of her midsection to screen her from the people.
Its isnad is hasan. Tirmidhi transmitted it in the chapters on funerals, in the chapter on where the imam should stand relative to the man and the woman, hadith 1034, from the hadith of Nafi Abu Ghalib, with this wording, and he said it is hasan. Ibn Majah also transmitted it, hadith 1494.As for Abu Ghalib's statement, "So I asked about what Anas used to do..." and so on, it is daif because of the unknown identity of those who told him about it.
