We buried a deceased person along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When we had finished, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ departed, and we left with him. When he reached his door, he stopped, and there was a woman approaching. I think he recognized her, and when she drew near, it turned out to be Fatimah, peace be upon her.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "What has brought you out of your house, Fatimah?"She replied, "Messenger of Allah, I came to the family of this house to console them and offer my sympathy for their deceased."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "Could it be that you went with them as far as the graves?"She said, "Allah forbid! I have heard you mention what you say about that."He said, "Had you gone with them as far as the graves..." and he mentioned a severe warning concerning that.I asked Rabia about "al-kuda," and he said, "I believe it means the graves."
حدثنا يزيد بن خالد بن عبد الله بن موهب الهمداني حدثنا المفضل عن ربيعة بن سيف المعافري عن أبي عبد الرحمن الحبلى
قبرنا مع رسول الله ﷺ يعني ميتا فلما فرغنا انصرف رسول الله ﷺ وانصرفنا معه فلما حاذى بابه وقف فإذا نحن بامرأة مقبلة قال أظنه عرفها فلما ذهبت إذا هي فاطمة عليها السلام فقال لها رسول الله ﷺ ما أخرجك يا فاطمة من بيتك فقالت أتيت يا رسول الله أهل هذا البيت فرحمت إليهم ميتهم أو عزيتهم به فقال لها رسول الله ﷺ فلعلك بلغت معهم الكدى قالت معاذ الله وقد سمعتك تذكر فيها ما تذكر قال لو بلغت معهم الكدى فذكر تشديدا في ذلك فسألت ربيعة عن الكدى فقال القبور فيما أحسب
[Its chain of transmission is hasan] Nasai narrated it in Al-Janaiz, chapter on announcing death, no. 1881, from the hadith of Rabia bin Sayf through this route. Hakim graded it sahih according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), 1/373, 374, and Dhahabi agreed with him. Rabia bin Sayf was deemed reliable by the majority, and his hadith is hasan.
