I was serving as a scribe for Jaz bin Muawiya, the uncle of Ahnaf bin Qays, when a letter from Umar reached us a year before his death. It instructed, "Kill every sorcerer, separate every Magian from those within the prohibited degrees of marriage, and forbid them from murmuring."So in a single day we executed three sorceresses and separated every Magian man from the female relatives whom he was forbidden to marry according to the Book of Allah. He prepared a large meal and invited them, then placed his sword across his thigh as they ate, so they ate without murmuring. They also unloaded the burden of a mule, or two mules, of silver coins.Umar had not been taking the jizya from the Magians until Abdul-Rahman bin Awf testified that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had taken it from the Magians of Hajar.

كنت كاتبا لجزء بن معاوية عم الأحنف بن قيس إذ جاءنا كتاب عمر قبل موته بسنة اقتلوا كل ساحر وفرقوا بين كل ذي محرم من المجوس وانهوهم عن الزمزمة فقتلنا في يوم ثلاثة سواحر وفرقنا بين كل رجل من المجوس وحريمه في كتاب الله وصنع طعاما كثيرا فدعاهم فعرض السيف على فخذه فأكلوا ولم يزمزموا وألقوا وقر بغل أو بغلين من الورق ولم يكن عمر أخذ الجزية من المجوس حتى شهد عبد الرحمن بن عوف أن رسول الله ﷺ أخذها من مجوس هجر
