When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ camped at Marr al-Zahran, Abbas said, "I thought to myself, by Allah, if the Messenger of Allah ﷺ enters Mecca by force before they come out to seek his protection, it will mean the destruction of Quraysh. So I mounted the mule of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said to myself, perhaps I will find someone with a need to go to the people of Mecca who can inform them of the position of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so they may come out to him and seek his protection.While I was riding, I suddenly heard the voices of Abu Sufyan and Budayl bin Warqa. I called out, 'Abu Hanzala!' He recognized my voice and said, 'Abu Fadl?'I said, 'Yes.'He said, 'What brings you here, may my father and mother be ransomed for you?'I said, 'This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the people.'He said, 'What is to be done?'"Abbas continued, "He mounted behind me, and his companion returned. When morning came, I brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he embraced Islam.I said, 'Messenger of Allah, Abu Sufyan is a man who loves honor, so grant him something.'He said, 'Yes. Whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is safe, whoever shuts his door upon himself is safe, and whoever enters the mosque is safe.'"The people then dispersed to their houses and to the mosque.
حدثنا محمد بن عمرو الرازي حدثنا سلمة يعني ابن الفضل عن محمد بن إسحق عن العباس بن عبد الله بن معبد عن بعض أهله
لما نزل رسول الله ﷺ مر الظهران قال العباس قلت والله لئن دخل رسول الله ﷺ مكة عنوة قبل أن يأتوه فيستأمنوه إنه لهلاك قريش فجلست على بغلة رسول الله ﷺ فقلت لعلي أجد ذا حاجة يأتي أهل مكة فيخبرهم بمكان رسول الله ﷺ ليخرجوا إليه فيستأمنوه فإني لأسير إذ سمعت كلام أبي سفيان وبديل بن ورقاء فقلت يا أبا حنظلة فعرف صوتي فقال أبو الفضل قلت نعم قال ما لك فداك أبي وأمي قلت هذا رسول الله ﷺ والناس قال فما الحيلة قال فركب خلفي ورجع صاحبه فلما أصبح غدوت به على رسول الله ﷺ فأسلم قلت يا رسول الله إن أبا سفيان رجل يحب هذا الفخر فاجعل له شيئا قال نعم من دخل دار أبي سفيان فهو آمن ومن أغلق عليه داره فهو آمن ومن دخل المسجد فهو آمن قال فتفرق الناس إلى دورهم وإلى المسجد
