Abdullah bin Harith reported that his father Rabia bin Harith and Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib said to Abdul-Muttalib bin Rabia and Fadl bin Abbas, "Go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and say to him, 'Messenger of Allah, we have reached the age you see, and we wish to marry. You, Messenger of Allah, are the most dutiful of people and the most attentive to family ties. Our fathers do not have the means to pay our dowries on our behalf. So appoint us, Messenger of Allah, over the collection of the alms, and we will deliver to you what the collectors deliver, and we will receive whatever benefit comes from it.'"He said, While we were in this state, Ali bin Abu Talib came to us and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has said, 'No, by Allah, we will not appoint any of you over the alms.'"Rabia said to him, "This is your doing. You have attained the honor of marrying into the family of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, yet we did not envy you for it."Ali threw down his cloak, lay upon it, and said, "I am Abu Hasan, the chief. By Allah, I will not move from this spot until your two sons return to you with the answer to what you have sent them with to the Prophet ﷺ."Abdul-Muttalib said, So Fadl and I set off toward the door of the Prophet's chamber ﷺ, and we arrived just as the noon prayer was being called. We prayed with the people, then Fadl and I hurried to the door of the Prophet's chamber ﷺ. He was that day at the home of Zaynab bint Jahsh. We stood at the door until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came, took hold of my ear and Fadl's ear, and said, "Out with what you are concealing." Then he entered and gave permission for Fadl and me to come in, so we entered.We deferred to one another briefly about who would speak. Then I spoke to him, or Fadl spoke to him (Abdullah was uncertain about which), saying what our fathers had instructed us to say.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was silent for a while and raised his gaze toward the ceiling of the room, until it grew long for us that he would not give us any reply. Then we saw Zaynab signaling with her hand from behind the curtain, indicating that we should not be hasty, and that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was considering our matter.Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lowered his head and said to us, "This alms is nothing but the filth of the people, and it is not lawful for Muhammad nor for the family of Muhammad. Call Nawfal bin Harith for me."So Nawfal bin Harith was summoned, and he said, "Nawfal, marry Abdul-Muttalib to your daughter." So Nawfal married me to her.Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Call Mahmiyah bin Jaz for me." He was a man from Banu Zubayd whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had appointed over the fifths. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Mahmiyah, "Marry Fadl to your daughter." So he married her to him.Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Get up and pay the dowry on their behalf from the fifth, such-and-such an amount," which Abdullah bin Harith did not specify to me.
حدثنا أحمد بن صالح حدثنا عنبسة حدثنا يونس عن ابن شهاب أخبرني عبد الله بن الحارث ابن نوفل الهاشمي أن
أن أباه ربيعة بن الحارث وعباس بن عبد المطلب قالا لعبد المطلب بن ربيعة وللفضل بن عباس ائتيا رسول الله ﷺ فقولا له يا رسول الله قد بلغنا من السن ما ترى وأحببنا أن نتزوج وأنت يا رسول الله أبر الناس وأوصلهم وليس عند أبوينا ما يصدقان عنا فاستعملنا يا رسول الله على الصدقات فلنؤد إليك ما يؤدي العمال ولنصب ما كان فيها من مرفق قال فأتى علي بن أبي طالب ونحن على تلك الحال فقال لنا إن رسول الله ﷺ قال لا والله لا نستعمل منكم أحدا على الصدقة فقال له ربيعة هذا من أمرك قد نلت صهر رسول الله ﷺ فلم نحسدك عليه فألقى علي رداءه ثم اضطجع عليه فقال أنا أبو حسن القرم والله لا أريم حتى يرجع إليكما ابناي بجواب ما بعثتما به إلى النبي ﷺ قال عبد المطلب فانطلقت أنا والفضل إلى باب حجرة النبي ﷺ حتى نوافق صلاة الظهر قد قامت فصلينا مع الناس ثم أسرعت أنا والفضل إلى باب حجرة النبي ﷺ وهو يومئذ عند زينب بنت جحش فقمنا بالباب حتى أتى رسول الله ﷺ فأخذ بأذني وأذن الفضل ثم قال أخرجا ما تصرران ثم دخل فأذن لي وللفضل فدخلنا فتواكلنا الكلام قليلا ثم كلمته أو كلمه الفضل قد شك في ذلك عبد الله قال كلمه بالأمر الذي أمرنا به أبوانا فسكت رسول الله ﷺ ساعة ورفع بصره قبل سقف البيت حتى طال علينا أنه لا يرجع إلينا شيئا حتى رأينا زينب تلمع من وراء الحجاب بيدها تريد أن لا تعجلا وإن رسول الله ﷺ في أمرنا ثم خفض رسول الله ﷺ رأسه فقال لنا إن هذه الصدقة إنما هي أوساخ الناس وإنها لا تحل لمحمد ولا لآل محمد ادعوا لي نوفل بن الحارث فدعي له نوفل بن الحارث فقال يا نوفل أنكح عبد المطلب فأنكحني نوفل ثم قال النبي ﷺ ادعوا لي محمئة بن جزء وهو رجل من بني زبيد كان رسول الله ﷺ استعمله على الأخماس فقال رسول الله ﷺ لمحمئة أنكح الفضل فأنكحه ثم قال رسول الله ﷺ قم فأصدق عنهما من الخمس كذا وكذا لم يسمه لي عبد الله بن الحارث
