Umar appointed me to collect the zakat. When I had finished, he ordered that I be given my wages. I said, "I worked only for the sake of Allah."He replied, "Take what you have been given. I myself worked during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he gave me my wages."
حدثنا أبو الوليد الطيالسي حدثنا ليث عن بكير بن عبد الله بن الأشج عن بسر بن سعيد
استعملني عمر على الصدقة فلما فرغت أمر لي بعمالة فقلت إنما عملت لله قال خذ ما أعطيت فإني قد عملت على عهد رسول الله ﷺ فعملني
Muslim also narrated it in the Book of Zakat, in the chapter on the permissibility of accepting something given without asking for it or coveting it, hadith no. 1045, from the hadith of Layth bin Saad, through this same chain. It has already appeared at no. 1647.
