A man reported,

They were stationed at one of the watering places. When news of Islam reached them, the owner of the water pledged a hundred camels to his people on the condition that they accept Islam. They accepted Islam, and he distributed the camels among them. Then he had second thoughts and wanted to take the camels back from them, so he sent his son to the Prophet ﷺ and said to him, "Go to the Prophet ﷺ and tell him, 'My father sends you greetings of peace. He pledged a hundred camels to his people on the condition that they accept Islam. They accepted Islam, and he distributed the camels among them. Now he has had second thoughts and wishes to take them back. Does he have a greater right to them, or do they?' If he says yes or no, then tell him, 'My father is an old man and he is the chief of the watering place. He asks you to grant me the chieftainship after him.'"So the son came to him and said, "My father sends you greetings of peace."He replied, "Peace be upon you and upon your father."The son said, "My father pledged a hundred camels to his people on the condition that they accept Islam. They accepted Islam, and their Islam was excellent. Then he had second thoughts and wished to take the camels back from them. Does he have a greater right to them, or do they?"He said, "If he decides to leave them with them, let him leave them. And if he decides to take them back, then he has a greater right to them than they do. If they remain in Islam, then their Islam stands for them. If they do not remain in Islam, they will be fought until they accept Islam."The son then said, "My father is an old man and he is the chief of the watering place. He asks you to grant me the chieftainship after him."He said, "The chieftainship is a real responsibility, and people cannot do without chiefs. But the chiefs are in the Fire."
