Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

When Allah عز وجل revealed "And do not approach the orphan's property except in the way that is best" and the verse "Indeed, those who consume the property of orphans unjustly...", anyone who had an orphan in his care set aside the orphan's food from his own food and the orphan's drink from his own drink. He would put aside whatever was left over from the orphan's food and keep it for him until he ate it or it spoiled. This became difficult for them, so they mentioned it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then Allah عز وجل revealed "They ask you about orphans. Say, 'Improvement for them is best. And if you mix your affairs with theirs, they are your brothers'". So they mixed their food with his and their drink with his.
