The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade that animals be tied up and used as targets.

Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Sacrifices and Hunting, in the chapter on what is disliked of mutilation, tying up animals, and killing them while confined, from Abu Walid Tayalisi. And Muslim narrated it in the Book of Hunting and Sacrifices, in the chapter on the prohibition of confining animals, hadith 5513, corresponding to hadith 1956, from the hadith of Shuba, with the same wording.
