A group of bedouins came rushing in at the time of the sacrifice during the era of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Store away a third and give the rest in charity."She said, sometime after that, it was said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Messenger of Allah, the people used to benefit from their sacrifices. They would render fat from them and make waterskins out of them."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What about that?" or words to that effect.They replied, "Messenger of Allah, you forbade keeping the meat of the sacrifices beyond three days."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I only forbade you because of the group that came rushing upon you. So eat, give in charity, and store away."
حدثنا القعنبي عن مالك عن عبد الله بن أبي بكر عن عمرة بنت عبد الرحمن قالت سمعت
دف ناس من أهل البادية حضرة الأضحى في زمان رسول الله ﷺ فقال رسول الله ﷺ ادخروا الثلث وتصدقوا بما بقي قالت فلما كان بعد ذلك قيل لرسول الله ﷺ يا رسول الله لقد كان الناس ينتفعون من ضحاياهم ويجملون منها الودك ويتخذون منها الأسقية فقال رسول الله ﷺ وما ذاك أو كما قال قالوا يا رسول الله نهيت عن إمساك لحوم الضحايا بعد ثلاث فقال رسول الله ﷺ إنما نهيتكم من أجل الدافة التي دفت عليكم فكلوا وتصدقوا وادخروا
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Sacrifices, chapter on the clarification of the prohibition of eating sacrificial meat after three days, etc, hadith no. 1971, from the hadith of Malik, through him. It is also found in the Muwatta (narrated by Yahya) 2/484, 485.
