The Prophet ﷺ set out at the time of Hudaybiyah with somewhat over a thousand of his companions. When they reached Dhul-Hulayfah, he garlanded the sacrificial animal, marked it, and entered the state of ihram for umrah. He continued the narration. The Prophet ﷺ traveled on until, when he reached the mountain pass from which one descends toward them, his she-camel knelt down. The people said, "Hal, hal!" but she refused to rise. They said, "Qaswa has become stubborn, Qaswa has become stubborn!"The Prophet ﷺ said, "She has not become stubborn, and that is not in her nature. Rather, the One who restrained the elephant has restrained her." Then he said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, they will not ask me today for any arrangement that magnifies the sanctities of Allah except that I will grant it to them." Then he urged her on and she sprang up.He turned away from them and camped at the far end of Hudaybiyah at a small water hole with little water. Then Budayl bin Warqa al-Khuzai came to him, and afterward Urwa bin Masud came and began to speak with the Prophet ﷺ. Whenever he spoke to him, he would take hold of his beard. Mughira bin Shuba was standing over the Prophet ﷺ holding a sword and wearing a helmet. He struck Urwa's hand with the hilt of the sword and said, "Keep your hand away from his beard."Urwa raised his head and asked, "Who is this?"They said, "Mughira bin Shuba."He said, "You treacherous one! Am I not still trying to settle the matter of your treachery?" Mughira had accompanied some men in the days of ignorance, then killed them and taken their wealth, and afterward come and embraced Islam. The Prophet ﷺ said, "As for your Islam, we accept it. As for the wealth, it is wealth gained through treachery, and we have no need of it."Then he mentioned the rest of the hadith. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Write, 'This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has agreed upon...'" and he recounted the story.Suhayl said, "And that no man from us shall come to you, even if he is upon your religion, without your returning him to us."When he had finished writing the document, the Prophet ﷺ said to his companions, "Get up, slaughter your animals, then shave your heads."Then believing women came as emigrants. The verse was revealed, and Allah forbade them from returning the women and ordered them to return the bridal gifts. Then he returned to Medina. Abu Baseer, a man from Quraysh, came to him. They sent in pursuit of him, and he handed him over to two men. They set out with him, and when they reached Dhul-Hulayfah, they stopped to eat from some dates they had.Abu Baseer said to one of the two men, "By Allah, I see that this sword of yours is excellent, so-and-so."The other drew it out and said, "Indeed, I have tested it."Abu Baseer said, "Show it to me so I may look at it." The man let him have it, and Abu Baseer struck him with it until he was lifeless. The other fled until he reached Medina and entered the mosque running. The Prophet ﷺ said, "This man has seen something terrifying."The man said, "By Allah, my companion has been killed, and I am about to be killed."Then Abu Baseer arrived and said, "Allah has fulfilled your covenant. You returned me to them, then Allah saved me from them."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Woe to his mother, what a kindler of war he would be if he had anyone with him!"When Abu Baseer heard that, he realized the Prophet would send him back to them, so he left and went to the seacoast. Abu Jandal also escaped and joined Abu Baseer, until a band of them gathered.
