The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on the day of Badr, "Whoever kills a man will have such and such, and whoever takes a captive will have such and such."So the young men rushed forward, while the older men held fast to the banners and did not leave them. When Allah granted them victory, the older men said, "We were your support. Had you been routed, you would have fallen back on us. So do not take off with the spoils and leave us with nothing."But the young men refused, saying, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ granted this to us."Then Allah revealed, "They ask you about the spoils of war. Say, the spoils belong to Allah and the Messenger," up to His words, "just as your Lord brought you out of your home in truth, while a party of the believers were averse to it" [Anfal 8:1–5].He said, and that turned out to be better for them. So likewise in this matter, obey me, for I know better than you what the outcome of this will be.
