The Prophet ﷺ said, "When you find a man who has stolen from the war spoils, burn his belongings and strike him."He said, "We found a copy of the Quran among his belongings." So he asked Salim about it, and Salim replied, "Sell it and give its price in charity."
حدثنا النفيلي وسعيد بن منصور قالا حدثنا عبد العزيز بن محمد قال النفيلي الأندراوردي عن صالح بن محمد بن زائدة قال أبو داود وصالح هذا أبو واقد قال دخلت مع مسلمة أرض الروم فأتي برجل قد غل فسأل سالما عنه فقال سمعت أبي يحدث
عن النبي ﷺ قال إذا وجدتم الرجل قد غل فأحرقوا متاعه واضربوه قال فوجدنا في متاعه مصحفا فسأل سالما عنه فقال بعه وتصدق بثمنه
[Its chain is daif] Tirmidhi transmitted it in the Book of Legal Punishments, Chapter on What Has Been Said About One Who Embezzles Spoils and What Should Be Done With Him, no. 1461, from the hadith of Abdul-Aziz Darawardi, and he said, "Gharib." It is also found in Sunan Saeed bin Mansur, no. 2729.Salih bin Muhammad is daif, and Bayhaqi (9/103) and others declared the hadith daif.
