In this account, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Return to them their women and their children. Whoever holds back anything of this spoil shall have, in exchange for it, six shares from the first booty that Allah grants us."Then the Prophet ﷺ approached a camel, took a tuft of hair from its hump, and said, "People, I have no share of this spoil, not even this," and he raised his two fingers, "except for the fifth, and even the fifth is returned to you. So hand over every needle and thread."A man stood up holding a ball of yarn in his hand and said, "I took this to mend a saddle-cloth of mine."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Whatever share belongs to me and to the sons of Abdul-Muttalib is yours."The man said, "If the matter has reached what I now see, then I have no need of it," and he threw it away.
[Hasan] Reported by Nasai, in the chapter on gifting an undivided share, hadith 3718, from the hadith of Hammad bin Salama, with this wording. It is also found in Sirah by Ibn Hisham (in my edition), hadith 203. Muhammad bin Ishaq stated explicitly that he had heard it directly, as recorded by Ibn Jarud, hadith 1080, and others.
