Ibn Shihab reported,

Urwa bin Zubayr reported that Marwan and Miswar bin Makhrama informed him that when the delegation of Hawazin came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as Muslims and asked him to return their property to them, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them, "I have with me those whom you see, and the speech I love most is the truest. Choose either the captives or the wealth."They said, "We choose our captives."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then stood up, praised Allah, and said, "To proceed, these brothers of yours have come repentant, and I have decided to return their captives to them. Whoever among you wishes to do so willingly, let him do so. And whoever wishes to hold to his share until we give him compensation from the first spoils Allah grants us, let him do so."The people said, "We have given that up willingly for them, Messenger of Allah."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them, "We do not know which of you has consented and which has not. Go back, and let your chiefs bring your decision to us."So the people went back, their chiefs spoke to them, and then informed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that they had given their consent willingly.

حدثنا أحمد بن أبي مريم حدثنا عمي يعني سعيد بن الحكم قال أخبرنا الليث بن سعد عن عقيل

عن ابن شهاب قال

وذكر عروة بن الزبير أن مروان والمسور بن مخرمة أخبراه أن رسول الله ﷺ قال حين جاءه وفد هوازن مسلمين فسألوه أن يرد إليهم أموالهم فقال لهم رسول الله ﷺ معي من ترون وأحب الحديث إلي أصدقه فاختاروا إما السبي وإما المال فقالوا نختار سبينا فقام رسول الله ﷺ فأثنى على الله ثم قال أما بعد فإن إخوانكم هؤلاء جاءوا تائبين وإني قد رأيت أن أرد إليهم سبيهم فمن أحب منكم أن يطيب ذلك فليفعل ومن أحب منكم أن يكون على حظه حتى نعطيه إياه من أول ما يفيء الله علينا فليفعل فقال الناس قد طيبنا ذلك لهم يا رسول الله فقال لهم رسول الله ﷺ إنا لا ندري من أذن منكم ممن لم يأذن فارجعوا حتى يرفع إلينا عرفاؤكم أمركم فرجع الناس وكلمهم عرفاؤهم فأخبروهم أنهم قد طيبوا وأذنوا
