The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on the expedition of Tabuk, so I set out to visit my family. When I returned, the first of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ companions had already departed. I went around Medina calling out, "Is there anyone who will carry a man in exchange for his share of the spoils?"An elderly man from the Ansar called out, "We will give him his share on the condition that he take turns riding with us, and that his food be from our provisions."I said, "Yes."He said, "Then set out with the blessing of Allah the Exalted."So I set out with the best of companions, until Allah granted us spoils of war. I received some young she-camels, which I drove along until I came to him. He came out and sat upon one of the saddlebags of his camels and said, "Drive them away from me."Then he said, "Drive them toward me."Then he said, "I see your young she-camels are nothing but excellent."I said, "They are simply your share of the spoils that I had stipulated for you."He said, "Take your young she-camels, my nephew. It was something other than your share that we wanted."
