We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey when he went off to relieve himself. We saw a red-coloured bird with two chicks, so we took its chicks. The mother bird came and began fluttering its wings on the ground in distress. The Prophet ﷺ returned and asked, "Who has distressed this bird by taking its young? Return its young to it."He also saw an ant colony that we had burned, so he asked, "Who burned this?"We said, "We did."He said, "It is not fitting that anyone punish with fire except the Lord of the fire."
[Its isnad is hasan] Hakim narrated it (4/239) from the hadith of Abu Ishaq Shaybani through this route, and graded it sahih, and Dhahabi agreed with him. The hadith has another route in Bukhari's Adab al-Mufrad, hadith 382.
