The verse was revealed, "If there are twenty steadfast among you, they will overcome two hundred" [Anfal 8:65]. This was difficult for the Muslims when Allah made it obligatory upon them that one man should not flee from ten. Then a relief came, and He said, "Now Allah has lightened it for you" [Anfal 8:66]. Abu Tuba recited up to His statement, "they will overcome two hundred" [Anfal 8:66]. He said, when Allah Almighty reduced the required number for them, the demand for steadfastness was lessened in proportion to what was lightened from them.
حدثنا أبو توبة الربيع بن نافع حدثنا ابن المبارك عن جرير بن حازم عن الزبير بن خريت عن عكرمة
نزلت {إن يكن منكم عشرون صابرون يغلبوا مائتين} فشق ذلك على المسلمين حين فرض الله عليهم أن لا يفر واحد من عشرة ثم إنه جاء تخفيف فقال {الآن خفف الله عنكم} قرأ أبو توبة إلى قوله {يغلبوا مائتين} قال فلما خفف الله تعالى عنهم من العدة نقص من الصبر بقدر ما خفف عنهم
