The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You have left behind in Medina people who shared with you in every step you marched, every coin you spent, and every valley you crossed."The companions asked, "Messenger of Allah, how can they be with us when they are in Medina?"He replied, "They were held back by valid excuse."
حدثنا موسى بن إسمعيل حدثنا حماد عن حميد
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال لقد تركتم بالمدينة أقواما ما سرتم مسيرا ولا أنفقتم من نفقة ولا قطعتم من واد إلا وهم معكم فيه قالوا يا رسول الله وكيف يكونون معنا وهم بالمدينة فقال حبسهم العذر
[Sahih] Bayhaqi narrated it, 9/24, from the hadith of Abu Dawud with this wording. Bukhari said in his Sahih (Book of Jihad, Chapter on One Whose Excuse Kept Him from Fighting, no. 2839), and Musa mentioned the wording and said, "The first is more sahih."
