I was sitting beside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a state of divine inspiration came over him, and his thigh fell upon mine. I have never felt anything heavier than the thigh of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at that moment. Then it lifted from him, and he said, "Write."So I wrote on a shoulder blade, "Not equal are those believers who sit at home" and "and those who strive in the cause of Allah", to the end of the verse. Then Ibn Umm Maktum, who was a blind man, stood up when he heard the merit of those who strive, and said, "Messenger of Allah, what about those believers who are unable to strive?"When he finished speaking, the state of inspiration came over the Messenger of Allah ﷺ again, and his thigh fell upon mine, and I felt its weight the second time just as I had the first. Then it lifted from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, "Recite, Zayd."So I recited, "Not equal are those believers who sit at home".The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "except those who have a disability", completing the verse.Zayd said, Allah revealed this addition on its own, and I appended it. By the One in whose hand my soul is, it is as if I can still see the place where I attached it, beside a crack in the shoulder blade.
