I came to Abu Saeed Khudri while he was giving religious rulings to the people, who were crowding around him. I waited until he was alone, and when he was free, I asked him about fasting Ramadan while traveling. He said, "We went out with the Prophet ﷺ during Ramadan in the year of the Conquest. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was fasting and we were fasting, until we reached one of the way-stations.He said, 'You have drawn near to your enemy, and breaking the fast will give you greater strength.'So some of us fasted and some broke the fast. Then we traveled on and stopped at another station. He said, 'You will meet your enemy in the morning, and breaking the fast will give you greater strength, so break your fast.'This was a firm command from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Abu Saeed said, "Then later I saw myself fasting with the Prophet ﷺ both before that and after it."
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Fasting, Chapter on the reward of one who breaks the fast while traveling if he undertakes work, hadith no. 1120, from the hadith of Muawiya bin Salih through the same chain.
