The matter of ghusl from major ritual impurity was discussed in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "As for me, I pour water over my head three times," and he gestured with both of his hands.
حدثنا عبد الله بن محمد النفيلي حدثنا زهير حدثنا أبو إسحق أخبرني سليمان بن صرد
عند رسول الله ﷺ الغسل من الجنابة فقال رسول الله ﷺ أما أنا فأفيض على رأسي ثلاثا وأشار بيديه كلتيهما
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Ghusl, Chapter on One Who Pours Water on His Head Three Times, hadith no. 254, from the hadith of Zuhayr. Muslim narrated it in the Book of Menstruation, Chapter on the Desirability of Pouring Water on the Head and Elsewhere Three Times, hadith no. 327, from the hadith of Abu Ishaq Sabi, with this same wording.
