When the verse "And upon those who are able to fast, with difficulty, a ransom of feeding a poor person" [Baqarah 2:184] was revealed, anyone among us who wished to break his fast and pay the ransom would do so, until the verse that came after it was revealed and abrogated it.
Bukhari related it in the tafsir of Surah Baqarah, chapter "Whoever among you witnesses the month, let him fast it," hadith 4507, and Muslim related it in the Book of Fasting, chapter clarifying the abrogation of Allah's statement "and those who are able to do it, a fidya..." and so on, hadith 1145, both of them from Qutayba with this chain.
